      We made Talker free

The time has come to talk of many things: About Talker’s present and future, and about what’s in for you.

Talker is now a part of the Teambox ecosystem. If you don’t know about it yet, I encourage you to take a look at our fine project collaboration software.

We love Talker. Just as Teambox, it became an essential part of our workflow. We want Talker to be useful for more people, and that’s why…

Talker is now free, with unlimited users

We are doing this because Teambox is our premium offering, and we consider group chat something essential for any team.

There is still a premium Talker version offering more storage and logs for those who choose paid accounts.

What will happen to existing premium plans?

If you have a premium plan, you can either keep your current plan indefinitely or ask for a refund for your last payment and stay on the free plan.

      What’s next for Talker

We are working on opening more parts of Talker. In the following months, we plan to release more tools for embedding and writing custom clients.

The focus will be on having rooms that are either public or private, and having different clients that can connect to it.

One of the applications consuming Talker as a chat service will be Teambox, which we plan to integrate fully with Talker.

Get your free Talker account now!

      Send Files in Google Chat

One of the few features that are available in Google Talk's desktop client, but couldn't be used in the web-based gadgets from Gmail, iGoogle and orkut, is file sharing. The missing feature is now available in iGoogle and orkut, but not yet in Gmail.

"Starting today, you can share photos, documents, and other files while chatting in iGoogle and orkut. To give it a try, just click Send a file... in the Actions menu while chatting with a friend (no download required). This feature is also compatible with the file transfer functionality in the Google Talk downloadable software, so you can share files directly from the web with folks who use the desktop version," explains Google.

You can send multiple files at the same time, but you can't select multiple files from the file picker dialog. Google Chat doesn't support transferring files larger than 100 MB.

Google Talk's desktop client is no longer updated, as Google focused on improving the chat feature from Gmail and adding similar features to iGoogle and orkut. Google Talk's homepage still links to the Windows client, but the first option is a plug-in for video chat.

      { Thanks, Niranjan. }

Meet skipfish, our automated web security scanner

      Friday, March 19, 2010 10:49 AM

      Posted by Michal Zalewski

The safety of the Internet is of paramount importance to Google, and helping web developers build secure, reliable web applications is an important part of the equation. To advance this goal, we have released projects such as ratproxy, a passive security assessment tool; and Browser Security Handbook, a comprehensive guide for web developers. We also worked with the community to improve the security of third-party browsers.

Today, we are happy to announce the availability of skipfish - our free, open source, fully automated, active web application security reconnaissance tool. We think this project is interesting for a few reasons:

      • High speed: written in pure C, with highly optimized HTTP handling and a minimal CPU footprint, the tool easily achieves 2000 requests per second with responsive targets.

      • Ease of use: the tool features heuristics to support a variety of quirky web frameworks and mixed-technology sites, with automatic learning capabilities, on-the-fly wordlist creation, and form autocompletion.

      • Cutting-edge security logic: we incorporated high quality, low false positive, differential security checks capable of spotting a range of subtle flaws, including blind injection vectors.
As with ratproxy, we feel that skipfish will be a valuable contribution to the information security community, making security assessments significantly more accessible and easier to execute.

To download the scanner, please visit this page; detailed project documentation is available here.

StatusNet Signs Up ABC News And Sh*t My Dad Says For Hosted Microblogging (Public Beta)

Does the world need more than one Twitter? How about 10,000 of them? That is how many sites are running on the hosted version of StatusNet, which went into private beta at our Realtime CrunchUp last November. Today, StatusNet is opening up its hosted service to all comers in a public beta.

You can think about StatusNet as the WordPress of microblogging. StatusNet is open-source software which can either be downloaded and run on your own enterprise servers or now on StatusNet%u2019s hosted servers. Basic service is free, with plans to charge for premium levels down the line. The premium versions will be ad-free, support unlimited users, larger file sizes, your own domain and design, Facebook and Twitter integration, and XMPP feeds.

CEO Evan Prodromou describes the various ways StatusNet can be used: as an open-source microblogging server akin to WordPress, as the basis for an online community %u201C(ning.com for microblogging); for enterprise (Open Source Yammer), or for a single user to own their social media presence (your own ping.fm).%u201D One of the cooler features of StatusNet is OStatus, which lets you follow people on different social networks all from within your hosted microblogging enevironment.

The largest site hosted on StatusNet is the company%u2019s own identi.ca, but StatusNet will also be hosting microblogging sites for ABC News, Shit My Dad Says (both not live yet at the time of this posting), the Twit Army, Kirsty Ally%u2019s weight loss community Phitter, Germany%u2019s Bleeper, and Today%u2019s Mama. All together, there are more than 1 million registered users across all 10,000 StatusNet sites.

Shit My Dad Says has 1.2 million followers on Twitter and a TV pilot in the works starring William Shatner. He will use StatusNet to push his updates to Twitter while controlling the advertising. ABC News plans to use StatusNet as a central dashboard to push out its headlines and updates to different social networks.

StausNet is based in Montreal and raised $1 million in seed capital last year.

      Backupify

Also los - jeden Tag ist Backup Awareness Day!
